The Wellness Business Playbook: Everything You Need to Know

You've decided to take your wellness practice online. Or maybe you've been online for a while and things feel scattered: a little income here, a lot of effort there, nothing that feels like a real business yet.
This is the guide I wish existed when Marvelous was getting started. Not a listicle of tactics. An actual playbook: the decisions, the building blocks, and the order you tackle them in when you're serious about creating something that lasts.
Start With One Clear Offer
The biggest mistake new online wellness businesses make isn't a technology choice or a marketing problem. It's trying to sell too many things to too many people at once.
Before you build anything, get clear on one thing: who is this for, and what transformation does it deliver? Not "yoga people" but specifically: busy professionals who want a 20-minute morning routine they can actually stick to. Not "health coaching" but: women in their 40s reclaiming their energy after years of putting everyone else first.
The clearer you can name the person and the shift they're looking for, the easier everything else becomes: your offer, your content, your pricing, your platform choice.
Pick one offer to start with. Launch it. Learn from real customers. Then expand.
Choose Your Business Model First, Platform Second
There are four main ways wellness creators monetize online:
Memberships: recurring monthly or annual access to a library of content, community, or live sessions. Best for sustainable, predictable revenue.
Courses: one-time purchase of a structured learning experience. Better for higher price points; requires more upfront marketing effort.
Private coaching: 1:1 or small group work delivered via video calls. High touch, high income per client, doesn't scale the same way.
Live sessions: weekly classes, workshops, or drop-in sessions. Creates community and consistency; works beautifully alongside memberships.
Most thriving wellness businesses combine two or three of these. A common pattern: live weekly classes that feed into a membership, with an occasional course or workshop for deeper transformation.
Your business model should drive your platform choice, not the other way around. If recurring memberships are core to your model, you want a platform built for that: with recurring billing, student management, and easy access control. If you're primarily selling standalone courses, you want strong course delivery and sales tooling.
Price for the Transformation, Not the Time
Wellness professionals chronically underprice. It's a pattern we've seen across thousands of creators on Marvelous, and it almost always comes from the same place: pricing based on what you'd pay for a class in person, rather than the value of the outcome you deliver.
A weekly yoga class costs $20 in a studio. An online membership that gives someone a consistent daily practice, access to on-demand content, and a community of people on the same path? That's worth $79 a month. Or $125. The math looks different when you're pricing the transformation.
Some benchmarks from Marvelous creators:
Drop-in memberships with 5-10 live sessions per week: $79-$125/month
Content library memberships (on-demand only): $39-$79/month
Premium annual memberships with live access + community: $997-$1,500/year
Standalone courses: $197-$997 depending on depth and transformation
When you're starting out, price toward the middle of those ranges. You can adjust based on what you learn. Underpricing trains your audience to undervalue the work.
Build Your Email List Before You Need It
Social media is a great way to reach new people. Email is how you keep them.
Algorithms change. Platforms disappear or shift their priorities. An email list is something you own. Over 12 years and 560,000+ students moving through Marvelous, the creators who weather every platform shift are the ones who built email relationships early.
You don't need a huge list to have a viable business. Some of our most successful creators launched to fewer than 500 email subscribers. What matters is the quality of the relationship, not the size of the number.
Start collecting emails before you launch. Offer something genuinely useful in exchange: a short guide, a sample class, a framework. Then show up in people's inboxes regularly, with content that's worth reading.
The Three Systems Every Online Wellness Business Needs
Once you have an offer, a price, and an audience, you need three systems to make it sustainable:
1. A delivery system: where students access your content, attend live sessions, and interact with your community. This is your platform. It should be easy for you to manage and effortless for students to use.
2. A payment system: recurring billing that handles subscriptions automatically, manages failed payments gracefully, and gives you real visibility into your revenue. Not a manual PayPal link. Actual subscription infrastructure.
3. A marketing system: a repeatable way to bring new people into your world and nurture them toward becoming students. At minimum: a consistent email sequence, some form of regular content, and one clear pathway from "found you" to "signed up."
You don't need all three to be perfect on day one. But you need all three to exist. Businesses stall when one of these is missing or broken.
Grow Slow Enough to Keep It Good
There's a version of "online wellness business" that looks like a funnel machine: ads, webinars, countdown timers, fake scarcity. It can generate big revenue numbers. It also burns most of the people who try it, burns their students, and rarely survives more than a few years.
The businesses we've watched grow steadily on Marvelous: some for eight, ten, twelve years: look different. They grow at the pace their delivery can sustain. They protect the quality of the student experience. They don't launch something they can't actually support.
The goal is a business that still exists in five years and still feels good to run. That requires a different set of choices than the goal of maximum revenue in the next 90 days.
Be honest with yourself about what you're actually building and for whom. Then build that. Not the version that looks impressive on a webinar slide.
