Do You Need a Website for Your Yoga Business?

If you've been Googling "do I need a website for my yoga business," you're probably sitting on a decision that feels more complicated than it should be. Build something from scratch? Update the Squarespace you set up three years ago? Just keep posting on Instagram and hope people find you?
Here’s the honest answer: no, you don’t technically need a traditional website to start teaching online and making money. But you do need something. And understanding the difference between those two things will save you months of work and a lot of money.
What a website is actually supposed to do for your business
Before we talk about whether you need one, it helps to get clear on what a website is for. At its core, your online presence needs to do four things:
Tell people who you are and what you offer
Give them a way to pay you
Deliver your content (classes, courses, recordings) to students
Build enough trust that a stranger becomes a paying student
A traditional website on WordPress, Squarespace, or Wix can technically do all of those things. But it doesn’t do any of them out of the box. You still need to bolt on a booking system, a payment processor, a video host, an email list tool, and a members-only area. And you need to maintain all of it yourself.
That's a lot of moving parts for someone who got into wellness to teach, not to manage software.
Why most wellness teachers don't need a custom website
Here's what we've learned from watching more than 560,000 students go through Marvelous over the past 12 years: the teachers who grow fastest are not the ones with the most polished websites. They're the ones who spend the least time on tech and the most time teaching.
A custom website gives you maximum flexibility and zero built-in tools. That's a great trade-off if you're a developer who loves tinkering. For most wellness teachers, it's a bottleneck.
You spend three weeks choosing a template. Another week setting up payments. Then you realize your video host doesn’t integrate with your booking system. Then your SSL certificate expires and your site shows a security warning for four days before you notice.
None of that time was spent helping students.
What you actually need to start taking bookings online
What you need is not a website. It’s a working sales and delivery system. Those are two very different things.
A working online business for a wellness creator needs:
A landing page where people can learn about your offer and sign up
A payment system that handles one-time purchases, subscriptions, and trials without you chasing invoices
A place to deliver your content: live classes, on-demand recordings, courses, PDFs, all behind a login
A basic student experience so people can actually find and use what they paid for
You do not need a 12-page website with an "About My Journey" section, a blog you'll never update, and a contact form that routes to an inbox you check twice a week.
Start simple. A single clear page with your offer, your price, and a "start your free trial" button has launched hundreds of successful wellness businesses. You can always add more later.
When a traditional website actually helps
To be fair, there are situations where a custom website earns its complexity:
When you want to rank in Google for local searches. If you’re a yoga teacher in Austin and you want to show up when people search “yoga classes in Austin,” a website with location-specific pages and local SEO gives you more control than an all-in-one platform. Though many platforms, including Marvelous, have public-facing pages that get indexed too.
When you're a multi-teacher studio with complex scheduling needs. If you have eight teachers, multiple class formats, and a front desk, you probably need purpose-built studio management software or a custom build. That’s a different situation than a solo practitioner going online for the first time.
When your brand requires total design control. If you're launching a high-touch premium retreat brand where every visual detail matters to your positioning, a custom site gives you flexibility that templates can't match.
For everyone else, the yoga teacher launching her first online membership, the Pilates instructor moving her in-person clients to a hybrid model, the health coach building a group program, the website question is a distraction from the work that actually grows your business.
The real cost of doing it yourself
Let’s be honest about what DIY website-building actually costs. Not just the monthly fees. Those are relatively small. The real cost is time.
A wellness teacher who builds a custom website can easily spend 40 to 80 hours in the first year on setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting. That’s a full work-week or more that went into web infrastructure instead of students.
There’s also the hidden cost of complexity. The more tools you string together, the more things break. A student can’t log in because her password reset email ended up in spam, and you don’t control that flow. A video upload fails silently and she’s left wondering whether she missed the class. A payment integration breaks after an update and you don’t notice for a week.
Every one of those moments erodes student trust. And student trust is what drives renewals, referrals, and long-term retention.
What wellness teachers actually use instead
The most practical path for most wellness creators is a platform that handles the whole stack: your public page, your checkout, your video delivery, your student portal, your live streaming, and your student emails, in one place, without duct tape.
That’s what we built Marvelous to be. One login. Your classes, courses, memberships, and live streams in one place. A public-facing page your students can find. Payments built in, with no revenue share taken. And a members-only area where everything you’ve ever taught lives, organized, searchable, and yours.
Teachers who switch to this model consistently tell us the same thing: they spend less time on tech and more time doing the work they came here to do.
Across more than $50 million in creator earnings on the platform, the teachers who do best aren't the ones with the most sophisticated websites. They're the ones with the clearest offer, the most consistent delivery, and a system that gets out of their way.
The one thing that matters more than your website
Whoever is asking whether you need a website is really asking: am I ready to sell this? Am I ready to put my offer in front of people and let them say yes or no?
The website question is often a procrastination question in disguise. If you have something to teach and people who want to learn it, you can start taking money this week, with or without a custom website.
What you need is clarity on your offer, a way to take payment, and a place to deliver what you promised. If you already have those three things handled somewhere, you're ready. The website can wait.
And if you don’t have those things yet, that’s what a platform like Marvelous is designed to give you, without the setup overhead of building it yourself.
