How to Set Up Coupons, Discounts, and Payment Plans

·

Pricing flexibility is one of the most underused tools in a wellness business.

Done well, a well-timed coupon fills a slow month. A payment plan removes the one barrier standing between a great student and your program. A discount for yoga teachers or health coaches builds goodwill and grows your community from the inside.

Done poorly, discounts become a habit. Students wait for the sale. You feel like you can never charge full price. And the financial math starts to work against you.

Here's how to set up coupons, discounts, and payment plans in a way that serves your business — not the other way around.

Why Pricing Flexibility Matters

A single price point turns away students who would otherwise thrive in your space — not because they don't value what you offer, but because the timing is wrong, the format doesn't fit, or they simply need a softer on-ramp.

Pricing flexibility doesn't mean lowering your prices. It means designing pathways that match how different students make decisions:

  • Some need to try before they commit (free trial or introductory offer)

  • Some need to spread the cost over time (payment plan)

  • Some have a professional affiliation that you want to honor (teacher discount)

  • Some arrive during a launch and respond to urgency (time-limited promotion)

Each of these is a legitimate strategy. The key is knowing which one to use when — and having the systems to run them cleanly.

Setting Up Coupons

A coupon is a code that applies a discount at checkout. It can be:

  • A fixed dollar amount ("SAVE20" = $20 off)

  • A percentage ("WELCOME15" = 15% off)

  • A free trial or access period

When to use a coupon:

  • New student welcome offer (one-time use, limited time)

  • Launch promotion for a new program or membership

  • Seasonal offer (fall enrollment, new year, back to practice)

  • Affiliate or partnership referral code

Coupon best practices:

  • Give each code a clear purpose and expiry date — this prevents codes from floating around indefinitely

  • Keep your code library small and auditable; too many active codes become hard to track

  • Set redemption limits where possible (e.g., first 20 students only)

  • Use codes you'd be comfortable seeing shared on social media — because they will be

What to avoid: Percentage discounts over 30% on your core membership or flagship program. Heavy discounts on ongoing subscriptions train students to expect them, and they're hard to walk back.

Setting Up Payment Plans

A payment plan breaks a larger purchase into installments — typically for courses, intensives, or annual memberships.

When payment plans make sense:

  • Programs priced $300 and above

  • Annual membership plans (offer a 2- or 3-pay option alongside the full annual price)

  • High-ticket workshops or teacher training programs

How to structure them:

  • 2-pay: split into two equal payments (upfront + 30 days later, or 50% deposit + 50% at start)

  • 3-pay: split into three monthly payments

  • Include a small convenience fee (5–10%) on payment plans if your platform supports it — this offsets the risk and is standard practice

The access question: Decide in advance whether students get full access from day one or progressive access as payments clear. For most wellness programs, full immediate access performs better for completion and satisfaction — just build in a card-on-file requirement.

What to avoid: Unlimited or open-ended payment plans. If someone can "pay whenever," they often don't. Set specific charge dates and communicate them clearly at checkout.

Honoring Discounts for Teachers and Partners

A professional discount (commonly called a yoga alliance discount, teacher rate, or wellness professional rate) is one of the most effective goodwill-building tools in the wellness space.

Teachers become advocates. They recommend you to their students. They bring their whole community with them.

A few guidelines:

  • Set a clear eligibility requirement (active teacher certification, studio affiliation, etc.)

  • Keep the discount consistent — a specific percentage or dollar amount off, not "just ask us"

  • Require a simple verification (email from a studio, certification number) before applying the discount in Stripe

  • Honor it cleanly, without making the teacher feel like they're asking a favor

Marvelous handles professional discounts through coupon codes or manual Stripe adjustments — whichever is easier for your workflow.

Launch Promotions: Getting the Most From a Limited-Time Offer

A launch promotion is a specific discount or bonus with a real deadline. It creates the urgency that moves people from "I've been meaning to" to "I'm doing it now."

The structure that works:

1. Founding member price — a lower rate locked in for the first cohort, honored as long as they stay (powerful for memberships)

2. Early bird bonus — full price, but with an added bonus (a coaching call, a physical resource, extra content) for the first X to sign up

3. Time-limited discount — 20–25% off for the first week of launch

What makes launches work:

  • A real deadline, communicated multiple times

  • A clear reason for the discount (you're new, they're early, you're celebrating something)

  • A clean end — the price goes up when you said it would

What to avoid: Perpetual "launch pricing" that never expires. Students learn quickly that the deadline isn't real, and future launches lose credibility.

Keeping It Simple

The trap in pricing flexibility is complexity. Ten active coupon codes, three payment plans, a different discount for every partnership — and suddenly your bookkeeping is a mess and you can't remember who's paying what.

A clean pricing structure:

  • One or two evergreen coupons (a welcome code for new subscribers, a teacher discount)

  • One payment plan per high-ticket offer

  • Launch promotions run and retired — not left active indefinitely

Review your active codes and plans quarterly. Archive anything that's been running more than 90 days without a clear purpose.

Pricing flexibility is a tool. Keep it sharp by keeping it simple.
